(Art doesn't just have to be limited to drawing you know XD)
(Under construction, the whole story isn't here yet, and I'll likely revise it. I've just had this conversation between Wolf and Alanna in my head for awhile now XD)
Wolf held the tiny glass bottle as Alanna licked from it. Her long pink tongue took large amounts of the green potion, and it seemed to Wolf like she had a determined look on her face, and sad, she looked sad as well.
The last of the potion of speech finally disappeared into Alanna's stomach, and Wolf carefully set the bottle down on a table, not taking her eyes off of her wolfonfly.
Alanna blinked, and took a step back, a hidden emotion deep inside her eyes as she looked at Wolf. Finally, she opened her mouth, and for the first time, a bark didn't come out, but words. A question, actually. Wolf was too absorbed in listening to her voice, powerful and a bit deeper than a normal female human's would be, and somehow young-ish sounding. Older than her, but young, maybe around 26 or so.
"I said." Alanna said, taking a few steps closer. "What do we mean to you?" This was such a strange first sentence, that Wolf just stared blankly at her. "Pardon?" She finally asked.
Alanna sighed and sat down. "Us, the wolfonflies, what do we mean to you?" She paused for a second, and then reworded it. "The Lucids and Recurrings. What are we to you?"
Wolf sat down too, right on the floor. "Er, could we back up a bit?" She asked weakly. "You don't seen surprised that the potion granted you the power of speech."
"I watched what happened with the collar." Was the reply. "Now please, answer my question. What do we mean to you? I mean... you almost let Curly..." She trailed off, and changed what she had been about to say. "You trained me like a dog, Wolf. You made me obey commands. What am I to you then, if the other one is too hard to answer, just a guard dog?"
Wolf's head was spinning. She certainly hadn't expected this from Alanna. "Well, erm, no." She said, trying to get her thoughts in order. "Alanna, you aren't just a dog to me, and neither are the other wolfonflies." She paused, and tried to collect them more. "You are... my companion." She said finally. "I care for you Alanna, and all my wolfonflies. I see you... as a cross between my children and my friends, with a little bit of pet mixed in. I trained you as I would have a dog because I couldn't think of any other way to stop you always acting on your emotions. Does that answer your question?"
Alanna nodded, and seemed deep in thought for a few minutes, and then threw another question at Wolf. "And Curly?" She said softly. "Why do you hate her?"
In Alanna's mind, and the rest of the pack's, Curly was something that Wolf disliked. She may not have time for most of her pack, but Curly, she seemed to avoid.
"Hate her?" Wolf asked, perplexed. She thought back to her Nightmares, and Curly, and the night Alanna's personality had changed. "I don't hate her, Alanna. If this is about the Nightmares... They told me that in order to breed, they needed a wolfonfly, a Lucid or Recurring. They told me that they would transform them into a Nightmare. They did not tell me that they would try to eat her..."
She took a deep breath, and then began the narration of what Alanna had come to call Her Story, but this was from a different point of view.
"I was curious about the Nightmares. They were so unlike any other wolfonfly I had come across. For one, they could talk, they could truly understand me. This was before potions of speeches and FAs were available. And so I got my first nightmares, Apocalypse and Ragnarok. From the very beginning they pestered me about having offspring, saying that if I gave them a Lucid or Recurring, they would give me an offspring in return, like a trade. I was intrigued by the idea, and so I tried to think of the perfect one."
She paused, gauging Alanna's reaction so far, and then continued. "Curly seemed like the outcast to me, always on the edge of things without much company. I thought that she would be happier once she had been transformed into a Nightmare, then I could be her friend, and Apocalypse and Ragnarok had assured me that they only wished for one offspring.
Softly, Alanna took up the story, a wondering look in her eyes. "And so you lifted Curly in your arms." She said quietly. "And took her into the Nightmare room."
Wolf nodded, and took the story back from her. "Yes." She said, and a small shudder ran through her. "I presented her to Apocalypse, who snatched her up by the tail and casually began telling me what she was going to do to her."
Alanna's eyes had grown round, and she listened with rapt attention now, her mind a whirlwind of emotions.
"Ragnarok began circling her, the acid dripping from his mouth..." She trailed off again, and then began anew. "Suddenly he lunged, and grabbed her in his tail. Some of his acid landed on her as she did so, and that scream..."
Alanna knew exactly what she meant. She could never forget that scream. But Wolf continued to talk, and she put her thoughts away for later.
"Just walk away Wolf. That was what Apocalypse said to me as she bent over her. "Just walk away. She won't scream again. Just walk away, and don't think, and we'll call you when it's time to hatch the egg." I was tempted, I'm not going to lie to you, but that frozen look of terror on Curly's face... I scooped her up in my arms and got out of there as quickly as I could. But now... now I had a paralyzed Recurring in my arms. This was before it was discovered that Nightmare venom wears off. The only way I knew how to unparalyze her was with a different Nightmare. And so, I gathered my courage, went back in there, and forced Apocalypse to unparalyze her. The look Curly gave me when I was back out and she had run away from me... I thought she wanted nothing to do with me anymore, although I can understand why she felt the other way."
Alanna was silent for a few minutes. "Why did you keep them?" She asked. "The Nightmares. Apocalypse and Ragnarok." She said the names after a pause, as though reluctant to do so. "Clearly they are monsters, why do you allow them to live with you?"
(More soon-ish. I must go to bed now, but I'll continue writing this soon. I have it all in my head, I just need to get it down on paper. I'll give Alanna her potion tomorrow too XD Right now it's like this is taking place in the future XD)
